Getting certified in lifeguarding and OH&S approved intermediate is never easy. It takes time and sometimes makes participants nervous. Common questions that students may have, from the perspective of a experienced first aid instructor trainer, master instructor trainer and teacher, include questions such as what happens if I fail the course? Nervous or introverted may contemplate whether they have to talk or present in a class? Another popular question that participants may have is whether or not they can receive two certificates in one day or will they see any blood as they are scared of the sight of blood. We will delve into these first aid training questions and hopefully put your mind at ease before you take your OH&S approved course in Alberta.
What happens if I Fail my course?
If you fail your course, no word of it will come back to your employer, unless the instructor or company has some communication with the provider or instructor. In other words, don’t stress, everyone, including the instructor, wants you to pass so they will come up with a solution. Providers such as St Mark James Training / Lethbridge First Aid offer a free retake of the course if you completely attend and fail on your first attempt of the course. This offer is not applicable to individuals that miss portions of the course or have failed the course multiple times.
Do I have to talk in the class?
Yes, you will likely have to do some talking in class. When you become trained in first aid, you will need to learn to take charge of a situation and ask people to contact EMS during an emergency. This requires communication and talking. If you’re not comfortable taking charge or speaking to anyone then maybe becoming a lifeguard or first aider at your workplace isn’t for you. But that’s not to say that you shouldn’t get first aid and / or CPR training because those skills learned in class can help you save a life.
Can I receive two certifications in the same day?
Yes, you can receive multiple certifications in one day. A student could ask for a CPR certificate and a first aid certificate in the spam of one day. However, your first aid certification includes CPR certification so it doesn’t make much sense to ask for two awards.
I’m scared of the sight of blood, will this affect my first aid training?
There is a very good chance you may see photos or videos of blood or something mimicking blood in your first aid course. If you have hemophobia, becoming a first aid attendant might not be the best direction for you to take. If you’re required to have the certification for school it may be best to advise your teacher about your fear of blood in case an emergency arises. We always encourage good communication between your employer, teacher or school when having issues such as these.
